Sustainability is more than just a trend at TRU Hair Salon—it’s a core value that drives every aspect of our operations. As the Head of Sustainability, I take great pride in ensuring that TRU Hair Salon minimizes waste, recycles properly, and educates our team on the best eco-friendly practices. Not only does this commitment benefit our clients and community, but it also helps position TRU Hair Salon as a leader in sustainable beauty in Colorado Springs.

But my passion for sustainability started long before my time at TRU. For over seven years, I’ve worked with salons and stylists across the industry to educate them on recycling practices, waste reduction, and sustainable product choices. I am also the founder of The Green Beauty Community Foundation, a brand-agnostic nonprofit that creates education and fosters a community around green, clean, and sustainable beauty for industry professionals. Through this work, I’ve helped countless beauty professionals take meaningful steps toward reducing their environmental impact.

Sustainable Initiatives at TRU Hair Salon

Recycling and Waste Management: Disposing of Everything Properly

At TRU, every material is carefully sorted to ensure proper recycling, composting, or disposal. Our commitment to sustainability includes:

• Hair Clipping Composting: Hair is a valuable natural resource, and instead of throwing it away, we collect clippings to be composted, reducing waste in landfills.

• Recycling Aluminum Foil & Color Tubes: Used foils and color tubes are separated and sent for proper recycling, minimizing waste from color services.

• Single-Stream Recycling: We recycle glass, paper, cardboard, and plastics (1-7), ensuring that all recyclable materials are processed correctly.

• Product Container Recycling: We encourage clients to bring back empty product containers so they can be responsibly recycled instead of ending up in landfills.

Eco-Conscious Water and Energy Practices

Water and energy conservation are major focuses for TRU Hair Salon. To minimize our environmental impact, we’ve implemented:

• EcoHeads in Shampoo Bowls: These advanced filtration systems reduce water usage while removing impurities that can affect hair health.

• Reverse Osmosis Water Refill Station: Clients are served purified water, reducing plastic waste from single-use bottled water.

Reducing Waste Through Refill Programs

TRU Hair Salon offers a refill program for our hair care products, allowing clients to bring in their empty containers and refill them at a lower cost. This program encourages sustainable habits while reducing single-use plastic waste.

Switching to Eco-Friendly Products

We carefully select our salon products to ensure they are organic, non-toxic, and sustainably packaged. We proudly carry brands like OWAY and ARETÈ, all of which align with our eco-conscious philosophy.

Eco-Friendly Laundry Practices

All of our salon linens are washed using biodegradable, non-toxic detergent sheets, eliminating plastic waste and harmful chemicals.

Educating and Inspiring Other Salons

Beyond TRU Hair Salon, I’ve dedicated my career to helping other beauty professionals implement greener practices. Through The Green Beauty Community Foundation and my work as Sustainable Mazey, I provide education on reducing salon waste, recycling materials properly, and choosing eco-friendly products. Before my time at TRU, I worked with salons nationwide to improve sustainability efforts, and I continue to offer guidance to stylists looking to make a positive impact.
